SusanCooperwasborninBuckinghamshire,EnglandinMayof1935.SheattendedSloughGrammarSchool,andthenwentontoSomervilleCollegeandOxford.ShewasthefirstwomantoeveredittheUniversityMagazine,theCherwell.ShegraduatedfromOxfordwithanMAinEnglishandwenttoworkforLondon'sTheSundayTimesasareporterontheAtticusColumnforIanFlemming.Sheevenutallymadeittofeatureswriter,duringwhichtimeshewroteherfirstbook,"Mandrake,"asciencefictionstoryforadults.Soonafterthepublicationof"Mandrake,"Cooperwrotethechildren'sstory"OverSea,UnderStone"forapublishinghousecompetition.Itwouldlaterbecomethefirstofafivebookseriesshewouldbecomefamousfor.SheleftEnglandin1963tomarryanAmericanprofessor.Oncethere,shewrotetwomorebooksforadults,"BehindtheGoldenGate"astudyofAmerica,and"PortraitofanAuthor"thebiographyofJ.B.Priestley.In1970,Cooperpublished"DawnofFear"analmostentirelyautobiographicalbookaboutgrowingupasachildduringthewar.EventhoughCooperwrote"OverSea,UnderStone"asaentryforapublishinghousecompetittion,shedidnotknowatthetimethatitwouldbethefirstofhermostfamouscopilation,"TheDarkisRisingSeries."In1973shewrotethesecondinthefivebookseries,entitled"TheDarkisRising,"publishedmorethantenyearsafterthefirst.In1974,CooperpublishedGreenwitch,bookthree,andbookfour,"TheGreyKing"ayearlater."TheGreyKing"wontheNewberryMedalin1976."SilverontheTree"wasthefifthandlastbookpublished,completingtheseriesin1977.Aftercompletingthe"DarkisRising"series,Cooperturnedtowritingforthetheater,learningthestylefromUrjoKaredaatTarragonTheatresinToronto.ShewroteforJackLangstaff's"Revels."Herfirstmajorplaywascalled"Foxfire,"whichwaswrittenincoolaborationwithHumeCronyn.TheplayeventuallywenttoBroadwayin1983andstarredHumeCronynandJessicaTandy,whowonaTonyforherperformance.Cooperthenbeganworkingon"Seaward,"butwasinterruptedbyJaneFonda,whowantedhertowritethescreenplayforHarrietArnow's"TheDollmaker."ShewrotetheadaptationwithCronynandwonaHumanitasAwardforit,whileJaneFondawontheBestActressEmmyforherrole.CooperalsogotanEmmynominationforheradaptationof"Foxfire"fortelevision."ToDancewiththeWhiteDog,"amadefortvmovie,wasthelastcollaborationofCooper,CronynandTandy,Tandyhavingdiedin'94.INthe'80'sand'90's,Cooperwrotethetextformanychildren'spicturebookssuchas,"JethroandtheJumbie"and"DannyandtheKings."1993markedherreturntotheChildren'sBookListwith"TheBoggart"andint'sfollowup"TheBoggartandtheMonster"in1997.In1996,Cooperpublishedacollectionofessaysonchildren'sliteratureentitled,"DreamsandWishes."Overthecourseofhercareer,Cooperhaswrittenfornewspapers,booksforchildrenandadults,screen[playsfortelevisionandcinema,andaBroadwatplay.Today,shelecturesonchildren'slitertureandcontinuestowrite.
