Plato,withSocratesandAristotle,isthefounderoftheWesternintellectualtradition.LikehismentorSocrates,hewasessentiallyapracticalphilosopherwhofoundtheabstracttheoryandvisionaryschemesofmanycontemporarythinkersmisguidedandsterile.Hewasbornabout429B.C.inAthens,thesonofaprominentfamilythathadlongbeeninvolvedinthecity'spolitics.ExtremelylittlesurvivesofthehistoryofPlato'syouth,buthewasraisedintheshadowofthegreatPeloponnesianWar,anditsinfluencemusthavecausedhimtorejectthepoliticalcareeropentohimandtobecomeafollowerofthebrilliantlyunorthodoxSocrates,theself-proclaimed"gadfly"ofAthens.Socrates'deathin399B.C.turnedPlatoforeverfrompolitics,andinthenextdecadehewrotehisfirstdialogues,amongthemApologyandEuthyphro.Atageforty,PlatovisitedItalyandSyracuse,anduponhisreturnhefoundedtheAcademy-Europe'sfirstuniversity-inasacredparkontheoutskirtsofAthens.TheAcademysurvivedforamillennium,finallyclosedbytheemperorJustinianinA.D.529.Platohopedhisschoolwouldtrainitspupilstocarryoutalifeofserviceandtoinvestigatequestionsofscienceandmathematics.Plato'soldagewasprobablydevotedtoteachingandwriting,hediedinAthensin348B.C.
