WilliamShakespeare,1564-1616AlthoughtherearemanymythsandmysteriessurroundingWilliamShakespeare,agreatdealisactuallyknownabouthislife.HewasborninStratford-Upon-Avon,sonofJohnShakespeare,aprosperousmerchantandlocalpoliticianandMaryArden,whohadthewealthtosendtheiroldestsontoStratfordGrammarSchool.At18,ShakespearemarriedAnneHathaway,the27-year-olddaughterofalocalfarmer,andtheyhadtheirfirstdaughtersixmonthslater.HeprobablydevelopedaninterestintheatrebywatchingplaysperformedbytravelingplayersinStratfordwhilestillinhisyouth.Sometimebefore1592,helefthisfamilytotakeupresidenceinLondon,wherehebeganactingandwritingplaysandpoetry.By1594ShakespearehadbecomeamemberandpartownerofanactingcompanycalledTheLordChamberlain'sMen,wherehesoonbecamethecompany'sprincipalplaywright.HisplaysenjoyedgreatpopularityandhighcriticalacclaiminthenewlybuiltGlobeTheatre.Itwasthroughhispopularitythatthetroupegainedtheattentionofthenewking,JamesI,whoappointedthemtheKing'sPlayersin1603.BeforeretiringtoStratfordin1613,aftertheGlobeburneddown,hewrotemorethanthreedozenplays(thatwearesureof)andmorethan150sonnets.HewascelebratedbyBenJonson,oneoftheleadingplaywrightsoftheday,asawriterwhowouldbe"notforanage,butforalltime,"apredictionthathasprovedtobetrue.Today,ShakespearetowersoverallotherEnglishwritersandhasfewrivalsinanylanguage.Hisgeniusandcreativitycontinuetoastoundscholars,andhisplayscontinuetodelightaudiences.Manyhaveservedasthebasisforoperas,ballets,musicalcompositions,andfilms.WhileJonsonandotherwriterslaboredovertheirplays,Shakespeareseemstohavehadtheabilitytoturnoutworkofexceptionallyhighcaliberatanamazingspeed.Attheheightofhiscareer,hewroteanaverageoftwoplaysayearaswellasdozensofpoems,songs,andpossiblyevenversesfortombstonesandheraldicshields,allwhilehecontinuedtoactintheplaysperformedbytheLordChamberlain'sMen.Thisstaggeringoutputisevenmoreimpressivewhenoneconsidersitsvariety.ExceptfortheEnglishhistoryplays,heneverwrotethesamekindofplaytwice.Heseemstohavehadagooddealoffunintryinghishandateverykindofplay.Shakespearewrote154sonnets,allpublishedon1609,mostofwhichwerededicatedtohispatronHenryWriothsley,TheEarlofSouthhampton.Healsowrote13comedies,13histories,6tragedies,and4tragecomedies.HediedatStratford-upon-AvonApril23,1616,andwasburiedtwodayslateronthegroundsofHolyTrinityChurchinStratford.Hiscauseofdeathwasunknown,butitissurmisedthatheknewhewasdying.HelenLaKellyHunt,Ph.D.,isawomen'sactivistwhoseworkinempoweringwomenearnedherelectiontotheWomen'sHallofFame.BarbaraA.MowatisdirectorofacademicprogramsattheFolgerShakespeareLibrary,senioreditorofShakespearequarterly,chairoftheFolgerInstitute,andauthorofTheDramaturgyofShakespeare'sRomancesaswellasessaysonShakespeare'splaysandtheeditingofthem.PaulWestineisaprofessorofEnglishatKing'sCollegeandtheGraduateSchooloftheUniversityofWesternOntario,Canada.HeisgeneraleditoroftheNewVariorumShakespeareandauthorofmanypapersandarticlesontheprintingandeditingofShakespeare'splays.
