ThephilosopherFriedrichNietzschewasborninPrussiain1844.Afterthedeathofhisfather,aLutheranminister,Nietzschewasraisedfromtheageoffivebyhismotherinahouseholdofwomen.In1869hewasappointedProfessorofClassicalPhilologyattheUniversityofBasel,wherehetaughtuntil1879whenpoorhealthforcedhimtoretire.Heneverrecoveredfromanervousbreakdownin1889anddiedelevenyearslater.Knownforsayingthat“godisdead,”Nietzschepropoundedhismetaphysicalconstructofthesuperiorityofthedisciplinedindividual(superman)livinginthepresentovertraditionalvaluesderivedfromChristianityanditsemphasisonheavenlyrewards.HisideaswereappropriatedbytheFascists,whoturnedhistheoriesintosocialrealitiesthathehadneverintended.R.J.HollingdalehastranslatedelevenofNietzsche’sbooksandpublishedtwobooksabouthim.Hehasalsotranslatedworksby,amongothers,Schopenhauer,Goethe,E.T.A.Hoffmann,LichtenbergandTheodorFontane,manyoftheseforthePenguinClassics.HeisHonoraryPresidentoftheBritishNietzscheSociety,andwasfortheAustralianacademicyear1991VisitingFellowatTrinityCollege,Melbourne.
