ThomasMannwasbornin1875inLubeck,ofalineofprosperousandinfluentialmerchants.MannwaseducatedunderthedisciplineofNorthGermanschoolmastersbeforeworkingforaninsuranceofficeagednineteen.Duringthistimehesecretlywrotehisfirsttale,Fallen,andshortlyafterwardshelefttheinsuranceofficetostudyartandliteratureattheUniversityofMunich.AfterayearinRomehedevotedhimselfexclusivelytowriting.Hewasonlytwenty-fivewhenBuddenbrooks,hisfirstmajornovel,waspublished.BeforeitwasbannedandburnedbyHitler,ithadsoldoveramillioncopiesinGermanyalone.Hissecondgreatnovel,TheMagicMountain,waspublishedin1924andthefirstvolumeofhistetralogyJosephandhisBrothersin1933.In1929hewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiterature.In1933ThomasMannleftGermanytoliveinSwitzerland.Then,afterseveralpreviousvisits,in1938hesettledintheUnitedStateswherehewroteDoctorFaustusandTheHolySinner.AmongthehonoursherecievedintheUSAwashisappointmentasaFellowoftheLibraryofCongress.Herevisitedhisnativecountryin1949andreturnedtoSwitzerlandin1952,whereTheBlackSwanandConfessionsofFelixKrullwerewrittenandwherehediedin1955.
