DorothyBaker(1907–1968)wasborninMissoula,Montana,in1907andraisedinCalifornia.AftergraduatingfromUCLA,shetraveledinFrance,whereshebegananoveland,in1930,marriedthepoetHowardBaker.ThecouplemovedbacktoCalifornia,andBakercompletedanMAinFrench,laterteachingataprivateschool.Afterhavingafewshortstoriespublished,sheturnedtowritingfulltime,despite,shewouldlaterclaim,being“seriouslyhamperedbyanabjectadmirationforErnestHemingway.”In1938,shepublishedYoungManwithaHorn,whichwasawardedtheprestigiousHoughtonMifflinLiteraryFellowshipAward.ShereceivedaGuggenheimFellowshipin1942and,thenextyear,publishedTrio,anovelwhosefrankportrayalofalesbianrelationshipprovedtooscandalousforthetimes;Bakerandherhusbandadaptedthenovelasaplayin1944,butitwasquicklyshutdownbecauseofprotests.Herfinalnovel,CassandraattheWedding(alsopublishedasanNYRBClassic),examinedtherelationshipbetweentwoexceptionallyclosesisters,whomHowardBakerassertedwerebasedonbothBakerherselfandthecouple’stwodaughters.Bakerdiedin1968ofcancer.GaryGiddinswasthejazzcriticforTheVillageVoice,wherehiscolumn“WeatherBird”ranforthirtyyears,andispresentlydirectoroftheLeonLevyCenterforBiographyattheGraduateCenteroftheCityUniversityofNewYork.HehascontributedarticlesaboutmusicandmoviestoTheNewYorkTimes,TheNewYorker,TheAtlantic,TheNation,Esquire,TheNewYorkSun,andVanityFair,amongothers.Hehaswrittentwelvebooks,includingVisionsofJazz,whichwontheNationalBookCriticsCircleAwardin1998,andBingCrosby:APocketfulofDreams.HismostrecentbookisWarningShadows:HomeAlonewithClassicCinema.
