Blendingstrongnarrativehistoryandafascinatinglookattheinterfaceofbusinessandtechnology,Computer:AHistoryoftheInformationMachinetracesthedramaticstoryoftheinventionofthecomputer.Morethanjustthetaleofatoolcreatedbyscientiststocrunchnumbers,thisbooksuggestsaricherstorybehindthecomputer’screation,onethatshowshowbusinessandgovernmentwerethefirsttoexploretheunlimitedpotentialofthemachineasaninformationprocessor.Notsurprisingly,attheheartofthebusinessstoryisIBM.Astoryofold-fashionedentreprenuershipinsymbioticrelationshipwithscientificknow-how,itbeginswaybackwhen”computers”werepeoplewhodidthecomputationalworkofscientists,andCharlesBabbageattemptedinvaintomechanizetheprocess.ButitalsoshowshowentrepreneurslikeHermanHollerith,seeingabusinessopportunityinamachinethatcouldmechanicallytabulatetheU.S.census,createdapunched-cardtabulatorthatbecamethetechnologythatcreatedIBM.TheauthorsshowhowENIAC,thefirstfullyelectroniccomputer,emergedoutofthewartimeneedofthemilitaryforcomputersthatperformedatlightningspeedanddidnotneedhumaninterventionatanystageoftheprocess.MostinterestingisthestoryofhowthecomputerbegantoreshapebroadsegmentsofoursocietywhenthePCenablednewmodesofcomputingthatliberatedpeoplefromdependenceonroom-sized,enormouslyexpensivemainframecomputers.Filledwithlivelyinsightsmanyabouttheworldofcomputinginthe1990s,suchasthestrategybehindMicrosoftWindowsaswellasadiscussionoftheriseandcreationoftheWorldWideWeb,hereisabooknoonewhoownsorusesacomputerwillwanttomiss.
