DifferentialgeometryhasdevelopedinmanydirectionssinceitsbeginningswithEulerandGauss.Thisoftenposesaproblemforundergraduates:whichdirectionshouldbefollowed?Whatdotheseideashavetodowithgeometry?Thisbookisdesignedtomakedifferentialgeometryanapproachablesubjectforadvancedundergraduates.Thetextservesasbothanintroductiontotheclassicaldifferentialgeometryofcurvesandsurfacesandasahistoryofthenon-Euclideanplane.Thebookbeginswiththetheoremsofnon-Euclideangeometry,thenintroducesthemethodsofdifferentialgeometryanddevelopsthemtowardsthegoalofconstructingmodelsofthehyperbolicplane.Interestingdiversionsareoffered,suchasHuygens'pendulumclockandmathematicalcartography;however,thefocusofthebookisonthemodelsofnon-Euclideangeometryandthemodernideasofabstractsurfacesandmanifolds.Althoughthemainuseofthistextisasanadvancedundergraduatecoursebook,thehistoricalaspectofthetextshouldappealtomostmathematicians.
