AllofthepublishedpoetryofJamesBaldwin,includingsixsignificantpoemspreviouslyonlyavailableinalimitededitionDuringhislifetime(1924–1987),JamesBaldwinauthoredsevennovels,aswellasseveralplaysandessaycollections,whichwerepublishedtowide-spreadpraise.Thesebooks,amongthemNotesofaNativeSon,TheFireNextTime,Giovanni’sRoom,andGoTellItontheMountain,broughthimwell-deservedacclaimasapublicintellectualandadmirationasawriter.However,Baldwin’searliestwritingwasinpoeticform,andBaldwinconsideredhimselfapoetthroughouthislifetime.Nonetheless,hissinglebookofpoetry,Jimmy’sBlues,neverachievedthepopularityofhisnovelsandnonfiction,andistheoneandonlybooktofalloutofprint.ThisnewcollectionpresentsJamesBaldwinthepoet,includingallnineteenpoemsfromJimmy’sBlues,aswellasallthepoemsfromalimited-editionvolumecalledGypsy,ofwhichonly325copieswereeverprintedandwhichwasinproductionatthetimeofhisdeath.Knownforhisrelentlesshonestyandstartlinglypropheticinsightsonissuesofrace,gender,class,andpoverty,Baldwinisjustasenlighteningandboldinhispoetryasinhisfamousnovelsandessays.Thepoemsrangefromtheextendeddramaticnarrativesof“Staggerleewonders”and“Gypsy”tothelyricalbeautyof“Somedays,”whichhasbeensettomusicandinterpretedbysuchacclaimedartistsasAudraMcDonald.NikkyFinney’sintroductoryessayrevealstheimportance,relevance,andrichrewardsoftheselittle-knownworks.Baldwin’smanydevoteeswillfindmuchtocelebrateinthesepages.

JamesBaldwin(1924-1987)wasanovelist,essayist,playwright,poet,andsocialcritic,andoneofAmerica'sforemostwriters.Hisessays,suchas"NotesofaNativeSon"(1955),explorepalpableyetunspokenintricaciesofracial,sexual,andclassdistinctionsinWesternsocieties,mostnotablyinmid-twentieth-centuryAmerica.AHarlem,NewYork,native,heprimarilymadehishomeinthesouthofFrance.HisnovelsincludeGiovanni'sRoom(1956),aboutawhiteAmericanexpatriatewhomustcometotermswithhishomosexuality,andAnotherCountry(1962),aboutracialandgaysexualtensionsamongNewYorkintellectuals.Hisinclusionofgaythemesresultedinmuchsavagecriticismfromtheblackcommunity.GoingtoMeettheMan(1965)andTellMeHowLongtheTrain'sBeenGone(1968)providedpowerfuldescriptionsofAmericanracism.Asanopenlygayman,hebecameincreasinglyoutspokenincondemningdiscriminationagainstlesbianandgaypeople.,,,
