RobertJordanwasthepennameofJamesOliverRigney,Jr.(October17,1948–September16,2007),underwhichhewasbestknownastheauthorofthebestsellingTheWheelofTimefantasyseries.HealsowroteunderthenamesReaganO'NealandJacksonO'Reilly.Charleston,SouthCarolina.HeservedtwotoursinVietnam(from1968to1970)withtheUnitedStatesArmyasahelicoptergunner.HewasawardedtheDistinguishedFlyingCrosswithbronzeoakleafcluster,theBronzeStarwith"V"andbronzeoakleafcluster,andtwoVietnameseGallantryCrosseswithpalm.AfterreturningfromVietnamheattendedTheCitadelwherehereceivedanundergraduatedegreeinphysics.AftergraduatinghewasemployedbytheUnitedStatesNavyasanuclearengineer.Hebeganwritingin1977.Hewasahistorybuffandenjoyedhunting,fishing,sailing,poker,chess,pool,andpipecollecting.Hedescribedhimselfasa"HighChurch"Episcopalianandreceivedcommunionmorethanonceaweek.HelivedwithhiswifeHarrietMcDougal,whoworksasabookeditor(currentlywithTorBooks;shewasalsoJordan'seditor)inahousebuiltin1797.OnMarch23,2006,Jordandisclosedinastatementthathehadbeendiagnosedwithcardiacamyloidosis,andthatwithtreatment,hismedianlifeexpectancywasfouryears,thoughhesaidheintendedtobeatthestatistics.HelaterpostedonhisDragonmountblogtoencouragehisfansnottoworryabouthimandthatheintendedtohavealongandfullycreativelife,workingforanother30years.HebeganchemotherapytreatmentatMayoClinicinRochester,MinnesotainearlyApril2006.JordanwasenrolledinastudyusingthedrugRevlimidjustapprovedformultiplemyelomabutnotyettestedonprimaryamyloidosis.Jordandiedatapproximately2:45p.m.EDTonSeptember16,2007,andafuneralservicewasheldforhimonWednesday,September19,2007.HislifewillbesubjectofthefeaturelengthdocumentaryTheWitoftheStaircase:TheLifeandWorksofRobertJordan.JordanwascrematedandhisashesburiedatanEpiscopalchurchplotoutsideCharleston.
