FyodorM.Dostoevsky(November11[O.S.October30]1821–February9[O.S.January28]1881)isconsideredoneofthegreatestRussianwriters,whoseworkshavehadaprofoundandlastingeffectontwentieth-centuryfiction.Hisworksoftenfeaturecharacterslivinginpoorconditionswithdisparateandextremestatesofmind,andexhibitbothanuncannygraspofhumanpsychologyaswellaspenetratinganalysesofthepolitical,socialandspiritualstatesofRussiaofhistime.Manyofhisbest-knownworksarepropheticprecursorstomodern-daythoughts.Heissometimesconsideredtobeafounderofexistentialism,mostfrequentlyforNotesfromUnderground,whichhasbeendescribedbyWalterKaufmannas"thebestovertureforexistentialismeverwritten."
