Newapproachesineconomic,social,labourandinstitutionalhistoryhavere-examinedguilds-notleastwithintheframeworkofare-appraisaloftheclassicdistinctionbetweenthe'capitalist'and'pre-capitalist'modesofproduction.Thesefreshapproachesareunravellingthereasonswhyguildswereestablished,andwhytheycouldmaintainthemselvessolong.Internationalcomparisonshavefosteredthisrejuvenationofguildstudies;awarenessisgrowingthatguildsarenotjustaEuropeanphenomenon,buthavebeenprominentalloverNorthernAfricaandtheMiddleEast,aswellasinmanypartsofAsia,includingChinaandJapan.ThisvolumeattemptstosetupacomparativeframeworktoanalysethefunctioningofguildsfromWesttoEast,intheperiodbetweenClassicalAntiquityandtheIndustrialRevolution.
