Carverwasbornintoapoverty-strickenfamilyatthetail-endoftheDepression.Thesonofaviolentalcoholic,hemarriedat19,startedaseriesofmenialjobsandhisowncareerof'full-timedrinkingasaseriouspursuit'.Acareerthatwouldeventuallykillhim.ConstantlystrugglingtosupporthiswifeandfamilyCarverenrolledinawritingprogrammeunderauthorJohnGardnerin1958andhesawthisasaturningpoint.Rejectingthemoreexperimentalfictionofthe60sand70s,hepioneeredaprecisionistrealismreinventingtheAmericanshortstoryduringtheeighties,headingthelineofso-called'dirtyrealists'or'K-martrealists'.Setintrailerparksandshoppingmallstheyarestoriesofbanallivesthatturnonaseeminlgyinsignificantdetail.CarverwriteswithmeticulouseconomysuddenlybringingalifeintofocusinasimilarwaytothepaintingsofEdwardHopper.Aswellasamasteroftheshortstoryhewasanaccomplishedpoetpublishingseveralhighlyacclaimedvolumes.Afterthe'lineofdemarcation'inCarver'slife-2June1977,thedayhestoppeddrinking-hisstoriesbecomeincreasinglymoreredemptiveandexpansive.Alcoholhadeventuallyshatteredhishealth,hisworkandhisfamily-hisfirstmarriageeffectivelyendingin1978.Hefinallymarriedhislong-termparterTessGallagher(theymettenyearsearlieratawriters'conferenceinDallas)inRenolessthantwomonthsbeforeheeventuallylosthisfightwithcancer.
