EdwardO.WilsonwasborninBirmingham,Alabamain1929.HereceivedhisB.S.andM.S.inbiologyfromtheUniversityofAlabamaand,in1955,hisPh.D.inbiologyfromHarvard,wherehehassincetaught,andwherehehasreceivedbothofitscollege-wideteachingawards.HeiscurrentlyResearchProfessorandHonoraryCuratorinEntomologyoftheMuseumofComparativeZoologyatHarvard.HeistheauthoroftwoPulitzerPrize-winningbooks,OOnHumanNature(1978)andTheAnts(1990,withBertHölldobler),aswellastherecipientofmanyfellowships,honors,andawards,includingthe1977NationalMedalofScience,theCrafoordPrizefromtheRoyalSwedishAcademyofSciences(1990),theInternationalPrizeforBiologyfromJapan(1993),and,forhisconservationefforts,theGoldMedaloftheWorldwideFundforNature(1990)andtheAudubonMedaloftheNationalAudubonSociety(1995).HeisontheBoardofDirectorsofTheNatureConservancy,ConservationInternational,andtheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistory,andgivesmanylecturesthroughouttheworld.HelivesinLexington,Massachusettswithhiswife,Irene.,,
