WilaCatherwasprobablyborninVirginiain1873,althoughherparentsdidnotregisterthedate,anditisprobablyincorrectlygivenonhertombstone.BecausesheissofamousforherNebraskanovels,manypeopleassumeshewasbornthere,butWilaCatherwasaboutnineyearsoldwhenherfamilymovedtoasmallNebraskafrontiertowncalledRedCloudthatwaspopulatedbyimmigrantSwedes,Bohemians,Germans,Poles,Czechs,andRussians.Theoldestofsevenchildren,shewaseducatedathome,studiedwithaLatinneighbor,andreadtheEnglishclassicsintheevening.BythetimeshewenttotheUniversityofNebraskain1891–whereshebeganbywearingboy'sclothesandcutherhairclosetoherhead–shehaddecidedtobeawriter.AftergraduationsheworkedforaLincoln,Nebraska,newspaper,thenmovedtoPittsburghandfinallytoNewYorkCity.ThereshejoinedMcClure'smagazine,apopularmuckrakingperiodicalthatencouragedthewritingofnewyoungauthors.AftermeetingtheauthorSarahOrneJewett,shedecidedtoquitjournalismanddevoteherselffulltimetofiction.Herfirstnovel,Alexander'sBridge,appearedinserialforminMcClure'sin1912.ButherplaceinAmericanliteraturewasestablishedwithherfirstNebraskanovel,OPioneers!,publishedin1913,whichwasfollowedbyhermostfamouspioneernovel,MyAntonia,in1918.In1922shewonthePulitzerPrizeforoneofherlesser-knownbooks.OneofOurs.DeathComesfortheArchbishop(1927),hermasterpiece,andShadowsontheRock(1931)alsocelebratedthepioneerspirit,butintheSouthwestandFrenchCanada.HerothernovelsincludeTheSongoftheLark(1915),TheProfessor'sHouse(1925),MyMortalEnemy(1926),andLucyGayheart(1935).WilaCatherdiedin1947.
