Asapreludetothepost-warconceptofasingle"mainbattletank"design,vehiclesduringWorldWarIItendedtobecategorizedaslight,medium,andheavy,dependingontheiruse.Inthislastcategory,tankshadgrowninsize,weight,andfirepowertocounterever-improvinganti-tankweaponsystems.Thisresultedinchangesintacticsanddoctrinetobetterintegrateheavyarmorintoacombinedarmssystem.ThiswasespeciallytrueontheEasternFront,wheretheopenterrainpromotedarmoractionandarapidcycleofimprovements.TheSovietswerequicktodevelopvehiclesthatwereabletofighttheTigerIonanequalfootingbylate1943,suchastheup-gunnedT-34/85andtheself-propelledISU-152s.BecausetheAmericanT-26/M-26Pershingarrivedlateinthewar,andtheBritishCenturionnotatall,onlytheSovietIS-2servesasanexampleofaheavydesignthatwasfieldedinlargebattlefieldnumbers.TheSovietdrivetocutoffenemyforcesinEastPrussiaduringOperationSolstice(February1945)isaprimeexampleofthisconflict.TheGermans,hadlimitedresources,andwerestrategicallyonthedefensive,butenjoyedever-shorterlogisticdistancesastheyretreated,andfoughtinanenvironmentandterrainthatplayedtothestrengthsofthetechnically-superiorKingTiger.TheIS-2waslighter,moremaneuverable,andfarmorenumerous,andusedtheseassetstoitsadvantage.Thisbattle,foughtintheclosingmonthsofthewar,depictstheclassiclate-warcontrastbetweenthemilitarydoctrinesofGermanyandtheSovietUnion.
