Foralongtime,RomanartwassomewhatovershadowedbytheartofancientGreece.Itwasonlyinabout1900thatasearchbeganforancientRomanartandarchitecture.TheRomanimperialcourtandimperialfamilywererolemodelsforartisticstyle,tasteandfashion--trendsetterswhichimperialsocietywasobligedtofollow.Itwasatcourtthatthe"new"tookshape,piecedtogetherfromthevocabularyofGreekoriginals,copiesandimitationsaswellasnewcreations,butfulfillingnewfunctionsandexpressingnewmeanings.Theportraitoftherulerandtheso-calledstatereliefs,whichenhancedandembroideredrealevents(bydepictinggodsforexample),hadaparticularinfluenceintheshapingoftheimagery.PartofTaschen's"BasicArt"movementandgenreseries,thisbookincludesadetailedintroductionwithapproximately30photographs,plusatimelineofthemostimportantevents(political,cultural,scientific,sporting,etc.)thattookplaceduringtheperiod.
