RafaelSabatini(1875-1950)wasanItalian/Britishwriterofnovelsofromanceandadventure.Afterabriefstintinthebusinessworld,Sabatiniwenttoworkasawriter.Hewroteshortstoriesinthe1890s,andhisfirstnovelcameoutin1902.In1905hemarriedRuthGoadDixon,thedaughterofaLiverpoolmerchant.IttookSabatiniroughlyaquarterofacenturyofhardworkbeforeheattainedsuccesswithScaramouchein1921.ThisbrilliantnoveloftheFrenchRevolutionbecameaninternationalbest-seller.ItwasfollowedbytheequallysuccessfulCaptainBloodin1922.Allofhisearlierbookswererushedintoreprints,themostpopularofwhichwasTheSeaHawkfrom1915.Sabatiniwasaprolificwriter;heproducedanewbookapproximatelyeveryyear.Whileheperhapsdidn'tachievethemammothsuccessofScaramoucheandCaptainBlood,nonethelessSabatinistillmaintainedagreatdealofpopularitywiththereadingpublicthroughthedecadesthatfollowed.ThepublicknewthatinpickingupaSabatinibook,theycouldalwayscountuponagoodread,andhisfollowingwasloyalandextensive.Bythe1940s,illnessforcedthewritertoslowhisprolificmethodofcomposition.However,hedidwriteseveraladditionalworksevenduringthattime.HediedFebruary13,1950inSwitzerland.HeisburiedatAdelboden,Switzerland.Onhisheadstonehiswifehadwritten,"Hewasbornwithagiftoflaughterandasensethattheworldwasmad",thefirstlineofhisbest-knownwork,Scaramouche.--ThistextreferstoanalternatePaperbackedition.
