ApracticallookatextendingthevalueofBuildingInformationModeling(BIM)intofacilitymanagement—fromtheworld'slargestinternationalassociationforprofessionalfacilitymanagersBuildingownersandfacilitymanagersarediscoveringthatBuildingInformationModeling(BIM)modelsofbuildingsaredeepreservoirsofinformationthatcanprovidevaluablespatialandmechanicaldetailsoneveryaspectofaproperty.Whenusedappropriately,thisdatacanimproveperformanceandsavetime,effort,andmoneyinrunningandmaintainingthebuildingduringitslifecycle.Itcanalsoprovideinformationforfuturemodifications.Forinstance,aBIMcouldrevealeverythingfromthemanufacturerofalightfixturetoitsenergyusagetomaintenanceinstructions.BIMforFacilityManagersexplainshowBIMcanbelinkedtofacilitymanagement(FM)systemstoachieveverysignificantlife-cycleadvantages.ItpresentsguidelinesforusingBIMinFMthathavebeendevelopedbypublicandprivateownerssuchastheGSA.ThereisanextensivediscussionofthelegalandcontractualissuesinvolvedinBIM/FMintegration.ItdescribeshowCOBiecanbeusedtoname,capture,andcommunicateFM-relateddatatodownstreamsystems.Thereisalsoextensivediscussionofcommercialsoftwaretoolsthatcanbeusedtofacilitatethisintegration.
