RalphHammondInneswasborninHorsham,Sussex,on15July1913andeducatedatCranbrookSchool,Kent.Heleftschoolagedeighteen,andworkedsuccessivelyinpublishing,teachingandjournalism.In1936,inneedofmoneyinordertomarry,hewroteasupernaturalthriller,TheDoppleganger,whichwaspublishedin1937aspartofatwo-year,fourbookdeal.In1939Innesmovedtoadifferentpublisher,andbegantowritecompulsively,continuingtopublishthroughouthisserviceintheRoyalArtilleryduringtheSecondWorldWar.Innestravelledwidelytoresearchhisnovelsandalwayswrotefrompersonalexperience-his1940snovelsTheBlueIceandTheWhiteSouthwereinformedbytimespentworkingonawhalingshipintheAntarctic,whileTheLonelySkiercameoutofapost-warskiingcourseintheDolomites.Hewasakeenandaccomplishedsailor,whichpassioninspiredhis1956bestsellerTheWreckoftheMaryDeare.Theequallysuccessful1959filmadaptationofthisnovelenabledInnestobuyalargeyacht,theMaryDeare,inwhichhesailedaroundtheworldforthenextfifteenyears,accompaniedbyhiswifeandfellowauthorDorothyLang.Inneswroteoverthirtynovels,aswellasseveralworksofnon-fictionandtraveljournalism.Histhrillingstoriesofspies,counterfeiters,blackmarketsandshipwreckearnedhimbothliteraryacclaimandaninternationalfollowing,andin1978hewasawardedaCBE.HammondInnesdiedathishomeinSuffolkon10thJune1998.
