On the Water: Palisade Bay

OntheWater:PalisadeBayisthecollaborativeinitiativeofagroupofengineers,architects,landscapearchitects,plannersandstudentstoimaginea"softinfrastructure"fortheNewYork/NewJerseyUpperBaybydevelopinginterconnectedinfrastructuresandlandscapeswhichrethinkthethresholdsofwater,landandcity.Theproposalissitedonthewater,alongthecoastaledgeandwithinthelocalcommunities.Itpresentsanewcoastalplanningstrategywhichnotonlymitigatespotentialdamagefromstormsbutalsoprovidesnewgroundforrecreation,ecologies,agricultureandurbandevelopment.Withclimatechangeandsealevelriseactingascatalystsforthiswork,aquantitativeanalysisofdynamicsystemsservesasthefoundationforthisnewsoftinfrastructurewhichbothenrichestheecologyoftheurbanestuaryandcreatesavibrantcultureonthewater.ResearchfromthisprojectistheinspirationfortheexhibitionRisingCurrents:ProjectsforNewYork'sWaterfront,openingatTheMuseumofModernArt,NewYork,inMarch2010.
