PeterHandkewasborninGriffen,Austria,in1942.Hecametoearlyprominenceinthe1960sforsuchexperimentalplaysasKasparandrapidlyestablishedhimselfasoneofthemostrespectedGerman-languagewritersofhisgeneration,producingfiction,translations,memoirs,screenplays,andessays.Amonghisbest-knownnovelsareTheGoalie’sAnxietyatthePenaltyKick,Repetition,andMyYearintheNo-Man’sBay.HehasdirectedadaptionsofhisnovelsTheLeft-HandedWomanandAbsenceandcollaboratedwithfilmmakerWimWendersonfourfilms,includingWingsofDesire.InadditiontoSlowHomecoming,NYRBClassicshasalsopublishedHandke’snovelShortLetter,LongFarewellandhismemoirASorrowBeyondDreams.BenjaminKunkelistheauthorofthenovelIndecisionandafoundingeditorofn+1magazine.RalphManheim(1907–1992)translatedGünterGrass,Louis-FerdinandCéline,HermannHesse,andMartinHeidegger,alongwithmanyotherGermanandFrenchauthors.,,,
