Whatbeganasanacademicinitiativetoimprovethequalityoflifeofthepoorstrataofthepopulationhasnowbecomeaprofessional"dotank"offeringservicesthatcovertheentirespectrumofurbandevelopment.ThecelebratedChileanarchitect,winnerofthe2016PritzkerPrizeandDirectorofthe2016VeniceArchitectureBiennale,AlejandroAravena(born1967)foundedElementalin2001inhishometownwiththegoalofalleviatingsocialdeprivationdirectlyinsteadofhopingforabalanceofincomerelations.Besidesbuildingpublicfacilitiesandpublichousing,Elementalalsodevelopsnewapproachesforthereorganizationofresourcesandthepotentialofcitiesbymeansofprojectsdevotedtoinfrastructureandtransportation.Thisvolume,firstpublishedin2013andnowbackinprint,documentsthesocialactivityandhistoryoftheinternationalarchitecturalteamandshedslightonitsfinancingstrategies,forexamplethroughparticipatorybuilding.
