WrittenbyDorisPilkington,thedaughteroftheoldestgirl,Molly,thestorytracesthetraumaticuprootingofthethreesistersfromtheircommunityinNorthwesternAustralia.Followingagovernmentedictin1931,blackchildrenandchildrenofmixedmarriagesweregatheredupandbroughttosettlementswheretheyweretobedisciplinedtoabandontheiraboriginalheritage,andtaughttobeculturallywhite.Thethreesisters,Molly,GracieandDaisyquicklyplannedanescapefromtheMooreRiverNativeSettlementwithitsharshlifeofpadlocks,barredwindows,hardcoldbedsandhorriblefood.Solitaryconfinementwasdoledoutasregularpunishmentandtheywereforbiddentospeaktheirownlanguage.Thegirlsheadedforthenearbyrabbit-prooffencethatstretchesover1000milesthroughthedeserttowardtheirhome.Theirjourneylastedoveramonth,andtheysurvivedoneverythingfromemustoferalcats,whilenarrowlyavoidingthepolice,professionaltrackers,andhostilewhitesettlers.Theirstoryisatrulymovingtaleofdefianceandresilience.
