BornChloeAnthonyWofford,in1931inLorain(Ohio),thesecondoffourchildreninablackworking-classfamily.Displayedanearlyinterestinliterature.StudiedhumanitiesatHowardandCornellUniversities,followedbyanacademiccareeratTexasSouthernUniversity,HowardUniversity,Yale,andsince1989,achairatPrincetonUniversity.ShehasalsoworkedasaneditorforRandomHouse,acritic,andgivennumerouspubliclectures,specializinginAfrican-Americanliterature.Shemadeherdebutasanovelistin1970,soongainingtheattentionofbothcriticsandawideraudienceforherepicpower,unerringearfordialogue,andherpoetically-chargedandrichly-expressivedepictionsofBlackAmerica.Amembersince1981oftheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters,shehasbeenawardedanumberofliterarydistinctions,amongthemthePulitzerPrizein1988.
