Canbusinessesvoluntarilyadoptprogressiveenvironmentalpolicies?Mostenvironmentalregulationsarebasedontheassumptionthatthepursuitofprofitleadsfirmstopollutetheenvironment,andthereforegovernmentsmustimposemandatoryregulations.However,newinstrumentssuchasvoluntaryprogramsareincreasinglyimportant.Drawingontheeconomictheoryofclubgoods,thisbookoffersatheoreticalaccountofvoluntaryenvironmentalprogramsbyidentifyingtheinstitutionalfeaturesthatinfluenceconditionsunderwhichprogramscanbeeffective.Bylinkingprogramefficacytoclubdesign,itfocusesattentiononcollectiveactionchallengesfacedbygreenclubs.SeveralanalytictechniquesareusedtoinvestigatetheadoptionandefficacyofISO14001,themostwidelyrecognizedvoluntaryenvironmentalprogramintheworld.Theseanalysesshowthat,whilethevalueofISO14001'sbrandreputationvariesacrosspolicyandeconomiccontexts,onaverageISO14001memberspollutelessandcomplybetterwithgovernmentalregulations.
