BeverlyClearywasborninMcMinnville,Oregon,and,untilshewasoldenoughtoattendschool,livedonafarminYamhill,atownsosmallithadnolibrary.HermotherarrangedwiththeStateLibrarytohavebookssenttoYamhillandactedaslibrarianinalodgeroomupstairsoverabank.ThereMrs.Clearylearnedtolovebooks.WhenthefamilymovedtoPortland,whereMrs.Clearyattendedgrammarschoolandhighschool,shesoonfoundherselfinthelowreadingcircle,anexperiencethathasgivenhersympathyfortheproblemsofstrugglingreaders.Bythethirdgradeshehadconqueredreadingandspentmuchofherchildhoodeitherwithbooksoronherwaytoandfromthepubliclibrary.Beforelongherschoollibrarianwassuggestingthatsheshouldwriteforboysandgirlswhenshegrewup.Theideaappealedtoher,andshedecidedthatsomedayshewouldwritethebooksshelongedtoreadbutwasunabletofindonthelibraryshelves,funnystoriesaboutherneighborhoodandthesortofchildrensheknew.AftergraduationfromjuniorcollegeinOntario,California,andtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley,Mrs.ClearyenteredtheSchoolofLibrarianshipattheUniversityofWashington,Seattle.Thereshespecializedinlibraryworkwithchildren.ShewasChildren'sLibrarianinYakima,Washington,untilshemarriedClarenceClearyandmovedtoCalifornia.TheClearysaretheparentsoftwins,nowgrown.Mrs.Cleary'shobbiesaretravelandneedlework.Mrs.Cleary'sbookshaveearnedhermanyprestigiousawards,includingthe1984JohnNewberyMedalforDearMr.Henshaw,forthemostdistinguishedcontributiontoAmericanliteratureforchildrenin1983.HerRamonaandHerFatherandRamonaQuimby,Age8werenamed1978and1982NewberyHonorBooks,respectively.AmongMrs.Cleary'sotherawardsaretheAmericanLibraryAssociation's1975LauraIngallsWilderAward,theCatholicLibraryAssociation's1980ReginaMedal,andtheUniversityofSouthernMississippi's1982SilverMedallion,allpresentedinrecognitionofherlastingcontributiontochildren'sliterature.Inaddition,Mrs.Clearywasthe1984UnitedStatesauthornomineefortheHansChristianAndersenAward,aprestigiousinternationalaward.Equallyimportantarethemorethan35statewideawardsMrs.Cleary'sbookshavereceivedbasedonthedirectvotesofheryoungreaders.TheBeverlyClearySculptureGardenforChildrenfeaturingbronzestatuesofRamonaQuimby,HenryHuggins,andRibsy,wasrecentlyopenedinPortland,Oregon.Thiswittyandwarmauthoristrulyaninternationalfavorite.Mrs.Cleary'sbooksappearinovertwentycountriesinfourteenlanguagesandhercharacters,includingHenryHuggins,EllenTebbits,OtisSpofford,andBeezusandRamonaQuimby,aswellasRibsy,Socks,andRalphS.Mouse,havedelightedchildrenforgenerations.TherehavebeenJapanese,Spanish,andSwedishtelevisionprogramsbasedontheHenryHugginsseries.PBS-TVairedaten-partseriesbasedontheRamonastories.One-houradaptationsofthethreeRalphS.MousebookshavebeenshownonABC-TV.AllofMrs.Cleary'sadaptationsstillcanbeseenoncabletelevision,andtheRamonaadaptationsareavailableinvideostores.
