WhenMargaretWiseBrownbegantowriteforyoungchildren,mostpicturebookswerewrittenbyillustrators,whosetrainingandtalentslaymainlyinthevisualarts.Brown,theauthorofGoodnightMoon,wasthefirstpicture-bookauthortoachieverecognitionasawriter,andthefirst,accordingtohistorianBarbaraBader,"tomakethewritingofpicturebooksanart."Aftergraduatingcollegein1932,Brown'sfirstambitionwastowriteliteratureforadults;butwhensheenteredaprogramforstudentteachersinNewYork,shewasthrilledbytheexperienceofworkingwithyoungchildren,andinspiredbytheprogram'sprogressiveleader,theeducationreformerLucySpragueMitchell.Mitchellheldthatstoriesforveryyoungchildrenshouldbegroundedin"thehereandnow"ratherthannonsenseorfantasy.Forchildrenagedtwotofive,shethought,realexperiencewasmagicalenoughwithoutembellishments.Fewchildren'sauthorshadattemptedtowritespecificallyforsoyounganaudience,butBrownquicklyprovedherselfgiftedatthetask.Shewasappointededitorofanewpublishingfirmdevotedtochildren'sbooks,whereshecultivatedpromisingnewwritersandillustrators,helpeddevelopinnovationsliketheboardbook,andbecame,asherbiographerLeonardS.Marcusnotes,"oneofthecentralfiguresofaperiodnowconsideredthegoldenageoftheAmericanpicturebook."ThoughBrownwasintenselyinterestedinmodernistwriterslikeGertrudeStein(whomshepersuadedtowriteachildren'sbook,TheWorldIsRound),itwasamedievalballadthatprovidedtheinspirationforTheRunawayBunny(1942),illustratedbyClementHurd.TheRunawayBunnywasBrown'sfirstdeparturefromthehere-and-nowstyleofwriting,andbecameoneofhermostpopularbooks.
