JOHNUPDIKEwasborninShillington,Pennsylvania,in1932.HegraduatedfromHarvardCollegein1954andspentayearinOxford,England,attheRuskinSchoolofDrawingandFineArt.From1955to1957hewasamemberofthestaffofTheNewYorker.HisnovelshavewonthePulitzerPrize,theNationalBookAward,theNationalBookCriticsCircleAward,theRosenthalFoundationAward,andtheWilliamDeanHowellsMedal.In2007hereceivedtheGoldMedalforFictionfromtheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters.JohnUpdikediedinJanuary2009.,,
