AynRand,1905-1982NovelistandphilosopherAynRandwasbornAliceRosenbaumonFebruary2,1905inSt.Petersburg,Russia.ShegraduatedwithhighesthonorsinhistoryfromtheUniversityofPetrogradin1924,andshecametotheUnitedStatesin1926withdreamsofbecomingascreenwriter.In1929,shemarriedactorCharles"Frank"O'Connor.AfterarrivinginHollywood,RandwasspottedbyCecilB.DeMillestandingatthegateofhisstudioandgaveherajobasanextrainKingofKings.Shealsoworkedasascriptreaderandawardrobegirland,in1932,shesoldRedPawntoUniversalStudios.Inthe1950's,shereturnedtoNewYorkCitywhereshehostedaSaturdaynightgroupshecalled"thecollective."ItwasalsoduringthistimethatRandreceivedafanletterfromayoungman,NathanielBranden.Shewasimpressedwithhisletter,andshewrotehimback.Hercorrespondencewithhimeventuallyledtoanaffairthatlastedoveradecade.Hebecameherchiefspokespersonandcodifiedtheprinciplesofhernovelsintoastrictphilosophicalsystem(objectivism)andfoundedaninstitutebearinghisname.Theiraffairendedin1968whenBrandengotinvolvedwithanotheroneofRand'sdisciples.AccordingtoRand,peopleareinherentlyselfishandactonlyoutofpersonalinterestmakingaselfishact,arationalone.Itisfromthisbeliefthathercharactersplayouttheirlives.Rand'sfirstnovelwas"WetheLiving"(1936)andwasfollowedby"Anthem"(1938),"TheFountainhead"(1943),and"AtlasShrugged"(1957).Allfourofhernovelsmadethetoptenofthecontroversiallistofthe100BestNovelsofthe20thCentury.OnMarch6,1982,AynRanddiedinherNewYorkCityapartment.
