ErnestHemingwaywasborninChicagoin1899,thesecondofsixchildren.In1917,hejoinedtheKansasCityStarasacubreporter.Thefollowingyear,hevolunteeredasanambulancedriverontheItalianfront,wherehewasbadlywoundedbutdecoratedforhisservices.HereturnedtoAmericain1919,andmarriedin1921.In1922,hereportedontheGreco-Turkishwarbeforeresigningfromjournalismtodevotehimselftofiction.HesettledinParis,associatingwithotherexpatriateslikeEzraPoundandGertrudeStein.Hewaspassionatelyinvolvedwithbullfighting,big-gamehuntinganddeep-seafishing.Recognitionofhispositionincontemporaryliteraturecamein1954whenhewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiterature,followingthepublicationofTheOldManandtheSea.Hediedin1961.
