VernaNorbergAardemaVugteveen(6June1911–11May2000),bestknownbythenameVernaAardema,wasanAmericanauthorofchildren'sbooks.BorninNewEra,MichiganshegraduatedfromMichiganStateUniversitywithaB.A.ofJournalismin1934.Sheworkedasagradeschoolteacherfrom1934to1973andbecameacorrespondentfortheMuskegonChroniclein1951,whichlasteduntil1972,theyearbeforesheretiredfromteachingelementaryschool.Fromthetimeshewasasmallgirl,sheknewthatshewouldbeawriter.Shespenteveryfreesecondreadinganythingshecouldgetherhandson.InherSeniorYearatMichiganStateshewonthreewritingcontests,thoughnotthefirst,theywerethemostinfluentialinherdecisiontocontinuetofollowherchildhooddream.Shefirstconsideredwritingforchildrenwhenherdaughterrefusedtoeatuntilshe'dheardoneofhermother'sstories.Thesebribeswereoftensetintheplacesthatshehadbeenreadingaboutrecently,andasshebecamemoreandmoreinterestedinAfrica,theybegantobesettheremorefrequently.In1960shepublishedherfirstsetofstories,TalesfromtheStoryHatwhichwereverysuccessful,andsoshecontinuedtoadapttraditionaltalesandfolklorefromdistantcultures,(usuallyfromAfricaandMexico)toexposeyoungchildrentothevastvarietyofhumanexpression.Herbook,WhyMosquitoesBuzzinPeople'sEars(1975),illustratedbyLeoandDianeDillon,receivedtheCaldecottMedalin1976andtheBrooklynArtBooksforChildrenAwardin1977.Who'sinRabbit'sHouse?1977wasthe1977SchoolLibraryJournalBestBookoftheYearandaLewisCarrollShelfAwardwinnerin1978.AardemareceivedtheChildren'sReadingRoundTableAwardin1981,andseveralofherworkshavebeenselectedasNotableBooksbytheAmericanLibraryAssociation.HerOhKojo!HowCouldYou!wonthe1984Parents'ChoiceAwardforLiterature.
