AdamSmithwasborninasmallvillageinKirkcaldy,Scotlandin1723.HeenteredtheUniversityofGlasgowatagefourteen,andlaterattendedBalliolCollegeatOxford.Afterlecturingforaperiod,heheldseveralteachingpositionsatGlasgowUniversity.HisgreatestachievementwaswritingTheWealthofNations(1776),afive-bookseriesthatsoughttoexposethetruecausesofprosperity,andinstalledhimasthefatherofcontemporaryeconomicthought.HediedinEdinburghonJuly19,1790.
