YasunariKawabatawasborninOsakain1899.In1968hebecamethefirstJapanesewritertoreceivetheNobelPrizeforLiterature.OneofJapan’smostdistinguishednovelists,hepublishedhisfirststorieswhilehewasstillinhighschool,graduatingfromTokyoImperialUniversityin1924.Hisshortstory“TheIzuDancer,”firstpublishedin1925,appearedinTheAtlanticMonthlyin1955.Kawabataauthorednumerousnovels,includingSnowCountry(1956),whichcementedhisreputationasoneofthepreeminentvoicesofhistime,aswellasThousandCranes(1959),TheSoundoftheMountain(1970),TheMasterofGo(1972),andBeautyandSadness(1975).HeservedasthechairmanoftheP.E.N.ClubofJapanforseveralyearsandin1959hewasawardedtheGoethe-medalinFrankfurt.Kawabatadiedin1972.
