AynRandAynRandisoneoftherarewriterswhonotonlydrewinreaderswithhernovels,butcreatedaphilosophicalmovementwiththem.HerseminalAtlasShruggedandTheFountainhead,cornerstonesofherindividualisticObjectivistworldview,canbeviewedasliterature,self-empowermenttexts,orboth.BiographyAynRandwasborninSt.Petersburg,Russia,onFebruary2,1905.AtagesixshetaughtherselftoreadandtwoyearslaterdiscoveredherfirstfictionalheroinaFrenchmagazineforchildren,thuscapturingtheheroicvisionthatsustainedherthroughoutherlife.Attheageofnineshedecidedtomakefictionwritinghercareer.ThoroughlyopposedtothemysticismandcollectivismofRussianculture,shethoughtofherselfasaEuropeanwriter,especiallyafterencounteringauthorssuchasWalterScottand—in1918—VictorHugo,thewritershemostadmired.Duringherhighschoolyears,shewaseyewitnesstoboththeKerenskyRevolution,whichshesupported,and—in1917—theBolshevikRevolution,whichshedenouncedfromtheoutset.Inordertoescapethefighting,herfamilywenttotheCrimea,whereshefinishedhighschool.ThefinalCommunistvictorybroughttheconfiscationofherfather'spharmacyandperiodsofnear-starvation.WhenintroducedtoAmericanhistoryinherlastyearofhighschool,sheimmediatelytookAmericaashermodelofwhatanationoffreemencouldbe.WhenherfamilyreturnedfromtheCrimea,sheenteredtheUniversityofPetrogradtostudyphilosophyandhistory.Graduatingin1924,sheexperiencedthedisintegrationoffreeinquiryandthetakeoveroftheuniversitybycommunistthugs.Amidsttheincreasinglygraylife,heronegreatpleasurewasWesternfilmsandplays.Longamoviefan,sheenteredtheStateInstituteforCinemaArtsin1924tostudyscreenwriting.Inlate1925sheobtainedpermissiontoleaveSovietRussiaforavisittorelativesintheUnitedStates.AlthoughshetoldSovietauthoritiesthathervisitwouldbeshort,shewasdeterminednevertoreturntoRussia.ShearrivedinNewYorkCityinFebruary1926.ShespentthenextsixmonthswithherrelativesinChicago,obtainedanextensiontohervisa,andthenleftforHollywoodtopursueacareerasascreenwriter.OnAynRand'sseconddayinHollywood,CecilB.DeMillesawherstandingatthegateofhisstudio,offeredheraridetothesetofhismovieTheKingofKings,andgaveherajob,firstasanextra,thenasascriptreader.Duringthenextweekatthestudio,shemetanactor,FrankO'Connor,whomshemarriedin1929;theyweremarrieduntilhisdeathfiftyyearslater.Afterstrugglingforseveralyearsatvariousnon-writingjobs,includingoneinthewardrobedepartmentattheRKOCorporation,shesoldherfirstscreenplay,RedPawntoUniversalStudiosin1932andsawherfirststageplay,NightofJanuary16th,producedinHollywoodandthenonBroadway.Herfirstnovel,WetheLiving,wascompletedin1933butwasrejectedbypublishersforyears,untilTheMacmillanCompanyintheUnitedStatesandCassellsandCompanyinEnglandpublishedthebookin1936.Themostautobiographicalofhernovels—itwasbasedonheryearsunderSoviettyranny—WetheLivingwasnotwell-receivedbyAmericanintellectualsandreviewers.AynRandwasupagainstthepro-communismdominatingthecultureduring"theRedDecade."ShebeganwritingTheFountainheadin1935.InthecharacterofthearchitectHowardRoark,shepresentedforthefirsttimethekindofherowhosedepictionwasthechiefgoalofherwriting:theidealman,manas"hecouldbeandoughttobe."TheFountainheadwasrejectedbytwelvepublishersbutfinallyacceptedbytheBobbs-MerrillCompany.Whenpublishedin1943,itmadehistorybybecomingabestsellerthroughword-of-mouthtwoyearslater,andgainedforitsauthorlastingrecognitionasachampionofindividualism.AynRandreturnedtoHollywoodinlate1943towritethescreenplayforTheFountainhead,butwartimerestrictionsdelayedproductionuntil1948.WorkingparttimeasascreenwriterforHalWallisProductions,shebeganhermajornovel,AtlasShrugged,in1946.In1951shemovedbacktoNewYorkCityanddevotedherselffulltimetothecompletionofAtlasShrugged.Publishedin1957,AtlasShruggedwashergreatestachievementandlastworkoffiction.Inthisnovelshedramatizedheruniquephilosophyinanintellectualmysterystorythatintegratedethics,metaphysics,epistemology,politics,economicsandsex.Althoughsheconsideredherselfprimarilyafictionwriter,sherealizedthatinordertocreateheroicfictionalcharacters,shehadtoidentifythephilosophicprinciplesthatmakesuchindividualspossible.Sheneededtoformulate"aphilosophyforlivingonearth."Thereafter,AynRandwroteandlecturedonherphilosophy—Objectivism.Shepublishedandeditedherownperiodicalsfrom1962to1976,heressaysprovidingmuchofthematerialforninebooksonObjectivismanditsapplicationtotheculture.AynRanddiedonMarch6,1982,inherNewYorkCityapartment.EverybookbyAynRandpublishedinherlifetimeisstillinprint,andhundredsofthousandsofcopiesaresoldeachyear,sofartotalingmorethantwentymillion.Severalnewvolumeshavebeenpublishedposthumously.HervisionofmanandherphilosophyforlivingonearthhavechangedthelivesofthousandsofreadersandlaunchedaphilosophicmovementwithagrowingimpactonAmericanculture.AuthorbiographycourtesyofTheAynRandInstitute.
