ThepresentvolumeisthefirstofthreethatwillbepublishedunderthegeneraltitleLecturesinlbstractfllgebra.Thesevol-umesarebasedonlectureswhichtheauthorhasgivenduringthepasttenyearsattheUniversityofNorthCarolina,atTheJohnsHopkinsUniversity,andatYaleUniversity.Thegeneralplanoftheworkisasfollows.Thepresentfirstvolumegivesanintroductiontoabstractalgebraandgivesanaccountofmostoftheimportantalgebraicconcepts.Inatreatmentofthistypeitisimpossibletogiveacomprehensiveaccountofthetopicswhichareintroduced.Neverthelesswehavetriedtogobeyond?thefoundationsandelementarypropertiesofthealgebraicsys-tems.Thishasnecessitatedacertainamountofselectionandomission.Wefeelthatevenatthepresentstageadeeperunder-standingofafewtopicsistobepreferredtoasuperficialunder-standingofmany.
