Almosttwodecadeshavepassedsincetheappearanceofthosegraphtheorytextsthatstillsettheagendaformostintroductorycoursestaughttoday.Thecanoncreatedbythosebookshashelpedtoidentifysomemainfieldsofstudyandresearch,andwilldoubtlesscontinuetoinfluencethedevelopmentOfthedisciplineforsometimetocome.Yetmuchhashappenedinthose20years,ingraphtheorynolessthanelsewhere:deepnewtheoremshavebeenfound,seeminglydisparatemethodsandresultshavebecomeinterrelated,entirenewbrancheshavearisen.Tonamejustafewsuchdevelopments,onemaythinkofhowthenewnotionoflistcolouringhasbridgedthegulfbetweeninvariantssuchasaveragedegreeandchromaticnumber,howprobabilisticmethodsandtheregularitylemmahavepervadedextremaigraphtheoryandRamseytheory,orhowtheentirelynewfieldofgraphminorsandtree-decompositionshasbroughtstandardmethodsofsurfacetopologytobearonlong-standingalgorithmicgraphproblems.
