DavidC.LayholdsaB.A.fromAuroraUniversity(Illinois),andanM.A.andPh.D.fromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles.Layhasbeenaneducatorandresearchmathematiciansince1966,mostlyattheUniversityofMaryland,CollegePark.HehasalsoservedasavisitingprofessorattheUniversityofAmsterdam,theFreeUniversityinAmsterdam,andtheUniversityofKaiserslautern,Germany.Hehasover30researcharticlespublishedinfunctionalanalysisandlinearalgebra.AsafoundingmemberoftheNSF-sponsoredLinearAlgebraCurriculumStudyGroup,Layhasbeenaleaderinthecurrentmovementtomodernizethelinearalgebracurriculum.Layisalsoco-authorofseveralmathematicstexts,includingIntroductiontoFunctionalAnalysis,withAngusE.Taylor,CalculusandItsApplications,withL.J.GoldsteinandD.I.Schneider,andLinearAlgebraGems-AssetsforUndergraduateMathematics,withD.Carlson,C.R.Johnson,andA.D.Porter.ProfessorLayhasreceivedfouruniversityawardsforteachingexcellence,including,in1996,thetitleofDistinguishedScholar-TeacheroftheUniversityofMaryland.In1994,hewasgivenoneoftheMathematicalAssociationofAmerica'sAwardsforDistinguishedCollegeorUniversityTeachingofMathematics.HehasbeenelectedbytheuniversitystudentstomembershipinAlphaLambdaDeltaNationalScholasticHonorSocietyandGoldenKeyNationalHonorSociety.In1989,AuroraUniversityconferredonhimtheOutstandingAlumnusaward.LayisamemberoftheAmericanMathematicalSociety,theCanadianMathematicalSociety,theInternationalLinearAlgebraSociety,theMathematicalAssociationofAmerica,SigmaXi,andtheSocietyforIndustrialandAppliedMathematics.Since1992,hehasservedseveraltermsonthenationalboardoftheAssociationofChristiansintheMathematicalSciences.
