HansSedlmayr(born18January1896inHornstein(Burgenland)–died9July1984inSalzburg)wasanAustrianarthistorian.SedlmayrwasUniversityProfessorofArtHistoryinViennafrom1936until1945,theninMunichfrom1951until1964,andfinallyattheUniversityofSalzburgfrom1965-69,whereheestablishedthearthistorycurriculum.HespecializedinthestudyofBaroquearchitectureandwroteabookonthechurchesofFrancescoBorromini.AfoundingmemberoftheNewViennaSchoolofarthistory,whichbaseditselfonthewritingsofAloisRiegl,hewroteamanifestoin1931calledZueinerstrengenKunstwissenschaft("TowardaRigorousStudyofArt").HeistheauthorofVerlustderMitte:DiebildendeKunstdes19.und20.JahrhundertsalsSymptomundSymbolderZeit(1948,"LossoftheCenter:theFineArtsoftheNineteenthandTwentiethCenturiesasSymptomandSymboloftheTimes"),publishedinEnglishin1957asArtinCrisis:TheLostCenter.HejoinedtheNationalSocialistGermanWorkersParty(NSDAP)in1932andfollowingWorldWarIIhelosthispositionattheTechnischeHochschuleinViennaasaresultofhismembership.HemovedtoBavaria,joiningtheeditorialstaffofaCatholicmagazine,WortundWahrheit("WordandTruth"),from1946to1954.In1951hebecameaprofessorattheLudwigMaximiliansUniversityofMunich.
