AbouttheAuthorsKaiHwangpresentlyholdsaChairProfessorofComputerEngineeringattheUniversityofHongKong(HKU),whiletakingaresearchleavefromtheUniversityofSouthemCalifomia(USC).Hehasbeenengagedinhighereducationandcomputerresearchfor26years,aftereamingthePh.D.inElectricalEngineeringandComputerSciencefromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley.HisworkonthisbookstartedattheUSCandwasmostlycompletedattheHKU.AnlEEEFeilow,hehaspublishedextensivelyintheareasofcomputerarchitecture,digitalarithmetic,parallelprocessing,anddistributedcomputing.HeisthefoundingEditor-in-ChiefoftheJownalofParallelandDistributedComputing.Hehaschairedtheintemationalconfeaeoces:lCPP86,ARITH-7,IPP96,ICAPP96,andHPCA-4in1998.Hehasreceivedseveralachicvementawardsforbutstandingresearchandacademiccon-tributionstothefieldofparallelcomputing.HehaslecturedworldwideandperrtormedconsultingandadvisoryworkforUSNationaiAcademyofSciencesMITLincolnLaboratory,IBMFishkill,TriTechinSingapore,PujitsuandETLinJapan,GMDinGermany,CERNSchoolofComputing,andAcademiaSinicainChiria.Presently,heleadsaresearchgroupatHKUindevelopingaanATM-basedmulticomputerclusterforhigh-performancecomputinganddistributedmultimedia,Intranet,ahdIntemetappliCations.ZhiweiXuisaProfessorandChiefArchitectattheNationalCenterforIntelligentComputingSystems(NClC),ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing,China.HeisalsoaHonoraryResearchFellowofHKU.HereceivedaPh.D.inComputerEngineeringfromtheUniversityofSouthemCalifomia.HeparticipatedintheSTAP/MPPbenchmarkprojectsledbyDr.HwangatUSCandHKUduringthepast5years.HehastaughtattheRutgersUniversityandNewYotkPolytechnfcUniversity.Hehaspublishedintheareasofparalletlanguages,pipelinedvectorprocessmg,andbenchmardevaluationofmassivelyparallelprocessors.Presently,heleadsadesigngroupatNClCinbuildingaseriesofcluster-basedsuperserversinChina.Hiscurrentresearchinterestliesmainlyinnetwork-basedclustercomputingandthesoftwareenvironmentsforparallelprogramming.
