StevenWeinberg–AutobiographyIwasbornin1933inNewYorkCitytoFrederickandEvaWeinberg.Myearlyinclinationtowardsciencereceivedencouragementfrommyfather,andbythetimeIwas15or16myinterestshadfocusedontheoreticalphysics.IreceivedmyundergraduatedegreefromCornellin1954,andthenwentforayearofgraduatestudytotheInstituteforTheoreticalPhysicsinCopenhagen(nowtheNielsBohrInstitute).There,withthehelpofDavidFrischandGunnarKällén.Ibegantodoresearchinphysics.IthenreturnedtotheU.S.tocompletemygraduatestudiesatPrinceton.MyPh.Dthesis,withSamTreimanasadviser,wasontheapplicationofrenormalizationtheorytotheeffectsofstronginteractionsinweakinteractionprocesses.AfterreceivingmyPh.D.in1957,IworkedatColumbiaandthenfrom1959to1966atBerkeley.Myresearchduringthisperiodwasonawidevarietyoftopics-highenergybehaviorofFeynmangraphs,second-classweakinteractioncurrents,brokensymmetries,scatteringtheory,muonphysics,etc.-topicschoseninmanycasesbecauseIwastryingtoteachmyselfsomeareaofphysics.Myactiveinterestinastrophysicsdatesfrom1961-62;Iwrotesomepapersonthecosmicpopulationofneutrinosandthenbegantowriteabook,GravitationandCosmology,whichwaseventuallycompletedin1971.Latein1965Ibeganmyworkoncurrentalgebraandtheapplicationtothestronginteractionsoftheideaofspontaneoussymmetrybreaking.From1966to1969,onleavefromBerkeley,IwasLoebLectureratHarvardandthenvisitingprofessoratM.I.T.In1969IacceptedaprofessorshipinthePhysicsDepartmentatM.I.T.,thenchairedbyVikiWeisskopf.ItwaswhileIwasavisitortoM.I.T.in1967thatmyworkonbrokensymmetries,currentalgebra,andrenormalizationtheoryturnedinthedirectionoftheunificationofweakandelectromagneticinteractions.In1973,whenJulianSchwingerleftHarvard,IwasofferedandacceptedhischairthereasHigginsProfessorofPhysics,togetherwithanappointmentasSeniorScientistattheSmithsonianAstrophysicalObservatory.Myworkduringthe1970'shasbeenmainlyconcernedwiththeimplicationsoftheunifiedtheoryofweakandelectromagneticinteractions,withthedevelopmentoftherelatedtheoryofstronginteractionsknownasquantumchromodynamics,andwithstepstowardtheunificationofallinteractions.In1982ImovedtothephysicsandastronomydepartmentsoftheUniversityofTexasatAustin,asJoseyRegentalProfessorofScience.ImetmywifeLouisewhenwewereundergraduatesatCornell,andweweremarriedin1954.Sheisnowaprofessoroflaw.OurdaughterElizabethwasborninBerkeleyin1963.(Fromnobel.se)
