OnApril10,1970,Hill927wasoccupiedbytroopersoftheScreamingEaglesofthe101stAirborneDivision.ByJuly,theactivitiesoftheartilleryandinfantryofRipcordhadcaughttheattentionoftheNVA(NorthVietnameseArmy)andalonganddeadlysiegeensued.RipcordwastheScreamingEagles’lastchancetodosignificantdamagetotheNVAintheAShauValleybeforethedivisionwaswithdrawnfromVietnamandreturnedtotheUnitedStates.AtRipcord,theenemycounterattackedwithferocity,usingmortarandantiaircraftfiretoinflictheavycausalitiesontheunitsoperatingthere.ThebattlelastedfourandahalfmonthsandexemplifiedtheultimatefrustrationoftheVietnamWar:theinabilityoftheAmericanmilitarytobringtobearitsenormousresourcestowinonthebattlefield.Intheend,the101stevacuatedRipcord,leavingtheNVAincontrolofthebattlefield.Contrarytothemantra“Wewoneverybattlebutlostthewar,”theUnitedStateswasdefeatedatRipcord.Now,atlast,thefullstoryofthisterriblebattlecanbetold.
