JamesD.WolfensohnwasborninAustraliain1933andisanaturalizedUScitizen.HeholdsaBAandLLBfromtheUniversityofSydneyandanMBAfromHarvardBusinessSchool,servedasanofficerintheAustralianAirForce,andwasamemberofthe1956AustralianOlympicFencingTeam.WolfensohnwasPresidentoftheWorldBankfrom1995to2005,priortowhichheestablishedhiscareerasaninternationalinvestmentbankerwithaparallelinvolvementindevelopmentissuesandtheglobalenvironment.AFellowofboththeAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciencesandtheAmericanPhilosophicalSociety,hehasreceivedmanyawardsforhisvolunteerwork.Heandhiswife,Elaine,havethreechildren-Sara,Naomi,andAdam.
