NigelBarley(born1947inKingstonuponThames,England)isananthropologistfamousforthebookshehaswrittenonhisexperiences.HestudiedmodernlanguagesatCambridgeUniversityandcompletedadoctorateinsocialanthropologyatOxfordUniversity.HeheldanumberofacademicpositionsbeforejoiningtheBritishMuseumasanassistantkeeperintheDepartmentofEthnography,whereheremaineduntil2003.Barley'sfirstbook,TheInnocentAnthropologist,wasawittyandinformativeaccountofanthropologicalfieldworkamongtheDowayopeopleofCameroon.ThereafterhepublishedanumberofworksaboutAfricaandIndonesiainsuchgenresastravel,art,historicalbiography,andfiction.BarleyhasbeentwicenominatedfortheTravelexWriteroftheYearAward.In2002,hewontheForeignPressAssociationprizefortravelwriting.
