FernandoPessoawasborninLisbonin1888andwasbroughtupinDurban,SouthAfrica.In1905hereturnedtoLisbonwherehematriculatedattheUniversity,andcontinuedtoreadandwriteinEnglish.Hepublishedin191835Sonnetsandin1922thethreepartsofhisEnglishPoems,allcomposedmanyyearsbefore.TherestofhislifepasseduneventfullyinLisbon.TheonlybookpublishedinhislifetimewasMensagem,acollectionofpoemsonpatrioticthemeswhichwonaconsolationprizeinanationalcompetition.Pessoaalsowroteunderthreepseudonyms,AlbertoCaeiro,AlvarodeCamposandRicardoReis,whosebiographiesheinvented.RichardZenithlivesinLisbon,whereheworksasafreelancewriter,translator,andcritic.HistranslationsincludeGalician-Portuguesetroubadourpoetry,novelsbyAntonioLoboAntunes,Pessoa'sTheBookofDisquiet,andFernandoPessoaandCo-SelectedPoems,whichwonthe1999AmericanPENAwardforPoetryinTranslation.
