NaguibMahfouzwasborninCairoin1911andbeganwritingwhenhewasseventeen.Astudentofphilosophyandanavidreader,hisworksrangefromreimaginingsofancientmythstosubtlecommentariesoncontemporaryEgyptianpoliticsandculture.Overacareerthatlastedmorethanfivedecades,hewrote33novels,13shortstoryanthologies,numerousplays,and30screenplays.Ofhismanyworks,mostfamousisTheCairoTrilogy,consistingofPalaceWalk(1956),PalaceofDesire(1957),andSugarStreet(1957),whichfocusesonaCairofamilythroughthreegenerations,from1917until1952.In1988,hewasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiterature,thefirstwriterinArabictodoso.HediedinAugust2006.
