AristotlewasbornatStageira,inthedominionofthekingsofMacedonia,in384BC.FortwentyyearshestudiedatAthensintheAcademyofPlato,onwhosedeathin347heleft,and,sometimelater,becametutoroftheyoungAlexandertheGreat.WhenAlexandersucceededtothethroneofMacedoniain335,AristotlereturnedtoAthensandestablishedhisschoolandresearchinstitute,theLyceum,towhichhisgreateruditionattractedalargenumberofscholars.AfterAlexander'sdeathin323,anti-MacedonianfeelingdroveAristotleoutofAthens,andhefledtoChalcisinEuboea,wherehediedin322.Hiswritings,whichwereofextraordinaryrange,profoundlyaffectedthewholecourseofancientandmedievalphilosophy,andtheyarestilleagerlystudiedanddebatedbyphilosopherstoday.VerymanyofthemhavesurvivedandamongthemostfamousaretheEthicsandthePolitics.
