ThevolumenamedThermodynamics-Howmucharetherealheatsofelectrodereaction?isananthologyonascholarlytopic,whichembodiestheoutcomeoftheauthor‘soriginalresearchovertheyearsandshowshissomefreshideasintheareaofphysicochemistryinprocessmetallurgy.Theauthor’sacademicworkhasbeenmainlyfocusingontheheatsofelectrodereaction.Intheresearchintothisproject,theauthorhasdiscoveredthattheheatreleaseandheatabsorptionofanelectrodeprocesscouldnotreallybepredictedaccordingtothecurrentknowledgeofthethermodynamicsorelectrochemistry,althoughthistypeofheatscantruthfullybemeasuredbyexperimentsandafairlyaccurateforecastofthereleasedorabsorbedheatsforacellreactioncanalsobegiven.Certainly,thesettlementofthisproblemhastodowiththeentropychangeofanelectrodereaction.Therefore,theissuebecomesverybasic.Forexample,whetherisitalwaysappropriateinallcasestostipulatetheentropychangeforthestandardhydrogenelectrodereactiontobezeroatanytemperature?Whatistheexactexpressionofthefirstandsecondlawsofthermodynamicswhentheyareusedtoanelectrodereaction?Inordertopredictandexperimentallymeasuretherealheatsofelectrodereaction,theauthorproposedtheconceptoftheabsolutescalefirstonwhichtheentropychangeforstandardhydrogenelectrodereactionatroomtemperaturehasbeengiven.Besides,thecontentisalsocompletewiththestudiesof“solutionchemistry”.“phaseboundariesofmuhicomponentsystem”.“oxygenpotentialofbuffergases”and“thermodynamicpropertiesofsubstances”.Amongthem,therearethediscussionsonthethermodynamicmodelsofaqueoussolutionofelectrolyteandmoltensaltsystem,therelationshipbetweentheprobability-distributionfunctionofwatermoleculesnearthesoluteionandtheosmoticcoefficientsofelectrolytesolution,thecompletecomputationandanalyticexpressionforpartialmolarpropertiesofcomponentsalongthephaseboundaries,thenewrepresentationforthechemicalpotentialsofoxygen,whichisdifferentfromtheclassicalone,andcanbeappliedtoconstructionofthediagramofoxygenpotentialagainsttemperature,etc.Theauthorhasattemptedtosystematizethepapersindifferentpoints.Thiswillbeindispensabletoresearchersinthefieldtograspthesecontentsmoredeeplyandtounderstandthecontributionintreatmentanddevelopmentofsomebasicissues.Ofcourse,thoseconclusionsinthecollectedpapersmightnotbeutterlystrictandcautious.Someofthemstillneedmoredeeplyacademicresearchesandfurtherexperimentstobeimproved.Forexample,whetheritisappropriateandreasonabletospecifybothalltheentropychangeandelectrodepotentialofareversibleelectrodereactiontobezerowhenthetemperatureinKelvinapproacheszero.Thevolumeasavaluablereferencereadingcouldbeusefulforstudentstudyandpostgraduatestudyoftherelatedspecialistarea,especiallyforthoseinterestedinmasteringtheexperimentalandtheoreticalaspectsofphysicochemistryinprocessmetallurgy.Thepublishingofthebookisalsoexpectedtobeabletoenlightenthemtoknowthattheremightbestillsomethingthathampersfurtherdevelopmentofthediscipline,evenfortherelativelymaturedisciplineandsomeknowledgethathasbeenmorewidelyaccepted.Atthetimewhenthebookispublished.theauthorwouldliketothanktheNationalNaturalScienceFoundationofChinaforfinancialsupport.Itisthesupportthathascreatedagreatsurrounding,wheretheauthorisabletomeditateonthesomeacademicissuesintherelatedprojects.TheauthoralsowishestoexpresshisappreeiationtotheStateEducationCommitteeofP.R.ChinaandtheUniversityofManitoba0fCanadafortheresearchesduringthestudyabroad,andtotheresearchcollaboratorswhogivethevaluablehelp.ProfessorXinminCHENwasmydoctoraladvisor.Hewasawell—knownscientistofphysicochemistryinprocessmetallurgyandthememberoftheChineseAcademyofSciences.Thisyearisjustthecentennialofhisbirth.TohimIdedicatethisvolumeintokenofaffectionandgratitude.
