Thispathbreakingstudypresentsanewperspectiveontheroleofderivation,theseriesofoperationsbywhichsentencesareformed.WorkingwithintheMinimalistProgramandfocusingonEnglish,theauthorsdevelopanoriginaltheoryofgenerativesyntax,providingilluminatingnewanalysesofsomecentralsyntacticconstructions.Twokeyquestionsareexplored:first,cantheExtendedProjectionPrinciple(EPP)beeliminatedfromMinimalistanalysiswithoutloss,andperhapswithagaininempiricalcoverage;andsecond,istheconstruct'A-Chain'similarlyeliminable?TheauthorsarguethatneitherEPPnortheA-chainisinfactapropertyofUniversalGrammar,butrathertheirdescriptivecontentcanbededucedfromindependentlymotivatedpropertiesoflexicalitems,inaccordancewithoverarchingprinciplesgoverningderivation.Ininvestigatingthesequestions,arangeofnewdataisintroduced,andexistingdatare-analyzed,presentingapioneeringchallengetofundamentalassumptionsinsyntactictheory.
