Frank(FrancisD.K.)Ching(born1943)isawidelyrecognizedauthorofbooksaddressingarchitecturalanddesigngraphics.Ching'sbookshavebeenwidelyinfluentialandcontinuetoshapethevisuallanguageofallfieldsofdesign.HeisaProfessorEmeritusattheUniversityofWashington.ChingwasbornandraisedinHawaii.HereceivedhisB.Arch.fromtheUniversityofNotreDamein1966.Afterseveralyearsofpractice,in1972hejoinedthefacultyatOhioUniversitytoteachdrawing.Tosupporthislecturesinarchitecturalgraphics,Chinghand-drewandhand-letteredhislecturenotes.Thesenoteswereeventuallyshowntothepublisher,VanNostrandReinhold,andwerepublished,in1974,inaneditedversionasArchitecturalGraphics,(abooknowinitsfourthedition).Chingwentontoproducetwelveotherbooks,includingBuildingConstructionIllustratedandArchitecture:Form,Space&Order.Ching'sprintinghasbeenadoptedbyAdobeinitsTektonfontfamily.Chingwas,foratime,anarchitecturefacultymemberattheUniversityofWisconsin–Milwaukee.Bythelate1980shehadbegunteachingattheUniversityofWashingtonintheDepartmentofArchitecture.HebecameafullProfessorin1991.Forthenextfifteenyears,heroutinelytaughtintroductoryarchitecturestudiosanddirectedbeginninggraphicsclasses.In2006Chingretired;hecurrentlyteachespart-timeasProfessorEmeritus.HetaughtasavisitingfacultymemberatTokyoInstituteofTechnologyin1990andattheChineseUniversityofHongKongin1993.ChinghasreceivedtheHonoraryDegreeofDoctorofDesignfromNottinghamTrentUniversity;theS.Y.ChungVisitingFellowship,NewAsiaCollege,ChineseUniversityofHongKong;andaCitationforExcellenceinInternationalArchitectureBookPublishing.ChingreceivedtheSpecialJuryCommendationinthe2007Cooper-HewittNationalDesignAwards,andanAIA2007InstituteHonorAwardforCollaborativeAchievement.
